Irish Politicians begin Assault on YouTube and Twitter

Now that Obama has proven the power of the internet as a political tool, other politicians around the world are attempting to follow suit, and Irish politicians are no exception.

In recent years there has often been a little flurry of blogging and YouTubing around election time, but only a few hardy Irish politicians blog the rest of the time. For many, it’s something they only think about in the run up to an election, because that is the traditional way to do things. Irish politicians have used the internet as if it were a poster on a lamppost; important for a few weeks, and then left to twist in the wind until taken down. The best way to blog however, is to persevere, to post regularly and gradually gather a following. This kind of approach to blogs and social media by Irish politicians is only slowly becoming more main-stream. (more…)

The HSE and Bebo

As the internet grows from novelty to vital infrastructure, governments around the world are gradually using more creative ways to harness it, to reach their citizens. We’ll be looking at two case studies to examine this in depth, one from Ireland and one from the US. This article focuses on the HSE’s use of Bebo, to highlight mental health issues. Xwerx Online Banking Usability Report

Over the past number of years, online banking has become one of the most common activities on the Internet. For many people, the bank’s online website has become their “local branch” while for banks, their website is becoming the face of the bank to a growing number of its customers.

Xwerx recently conducted usability testing with members of the public on a number of Irish banking websites and compiled this report based on the findings. It assesses how important usability is in an online banking website, which websites come out on top and what competitors need to do to get there.

Irish Disability Bill & Web Accessibility

The Irish Disability Bill, first published in December 2001, was withdrawn from the Oireachtas two months later pending consultation with disability groups.

Currently, in Ireland, specific legislation regarding web accessibility does not exist. The Employment Equality Act (1998) and the Equality Status Act (2000) do, however, dictate that equal access is required to technology in the workplace. The introduction of a Disability Act may be cited in legal action against a website, and so will have implications for web developers, designers, owners, users and all round access of the Irish Web.
