Navigating Through

Steve Krug, in his book, Don’t Make Me Think, wrote that, “as soon as we find a link that seems like it might lead to what we’re looking for, there’s a good chance we’ll click it”.

So is it the user who’s not thinking or the designer? In the case of muddled navigation, it’s the designer.

Would You Like To Skip It?

For those who prefer to use the keyboard or a screen reader to access a web page, there is a technique used known as skip navigation. This means employing the tab key to skip navigation links and enter the page at the main content.

According to Jim Thatcher, there are “no hard and fast rules” when applying the skip navigation function to your web page. It is advised that if there are “five links or more on your page and other content that comes before the main content”, then you should use this method. (more…)
