Much has been made of whether podcasting can reach out to users with accessibility issues. We have come to accept the medium as being very helpful to those with visual impairments but of no benefit to users with hearing impairments. Fortunately, methods like transcripts and subtitling are beginning to make the medium much more accessible to these alienated users. (more…)

Podcasts Part 1 - Popularisation

In December 2005, the word Podcast was awarded the New Oxford American Dictionary’s word of the year. It beat off words like “Sudoku” and “Bird flu” to gain this title. How did something that was once the preserve of nerds and techie bloggers manage to become one of the web’s hottest trends and the defining phrase of the year? And, perhaps most significantly for accessible.ie, what can people do to help podcasting reach out to those with access issues? (more…)
